Mass Production by Hedge-sparrow

Puzzle explanation

Letters dropped from jumbled entries gave the name “Large Hadron Collider” for the machine represented by the grid. This is the particle collider located in Geneva at the “European Laboratory for Particle Physics”, or CERN; these alternative location names appear in the outer ring. The products in the third ring are subatomic particles, including “anti-electron” (as the positron was formerly known). The fifth ring has a pair of “proton beams” counter-rotating and colliding, which is the essential process occurring in the collider. The longed-for end-product is the currently hypothetical “Higgs boson”, whose discovery would help to explain the origin of mass in the universe.
