Inn Joke by Mr Lemon

Puzzle explanation

The quotation from unclued entries is Juvenal’s “Nemo repente fuit turpissimus”, which is translated in an appendix in Chambers as “no one ever became utterly bad all at once”. It is also facetiously “translated” by members of the bar as “It takes seven years to become a solicitor”. The originator according to Baron Brampton was probably Lord Young, a Scottish judge and a bencher of the Middle Temple noted for his wit.
