Puzzle explanation

The wordplay-only clues produced real words that were the surnames of authors of detective fiction with an extra letter added, in clue order: Agatha Christie, Barbara Vine, Josephine Tey, Edmund Crispin, Edgar Allan Poe, Raymond Chandler, John Dickson Carr, Susan Hill, Dorothy L. Sayers, R. Austin Freeman. The extra letters could be arranged as Conan Doyle. The entry at 27ac was a jumble of BAKER STREET, representing a “Baker Street Irregular” from the Sherlock Holmes stories.
