Telling Lies by Somniloquist

Puzzle explanation

The extra letters in wordplay spelt out “cut out extra words then fold”. The extra words in five clues appeared horizontally in the grid, where they were cut out before folding it in half. The letters then visible through the grid holes gave the 1964 novel title ALBERT ANGELO and its author B. S. JOHNSON. In the novel there are holes in some pages, through which later events in the story can be seen. In the penultimate chapter the author intervenes to discuss his intentions in writing the novel, saying “telling stories is telling lies”.
