Puzzle explanation

The corrections for misprints in the across clues spelt out “I stood in Venice; GG Byron”. Canto IV of George Gordon Byron’s Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage starts with the lines:

I stood in Venice, on the Bridge of Sighs;
A palace and a prison on each hand:

In the grid BRIDGE OF SIGHS formed an arch between the unclued entries PALACE and PRISON, with its canal, the RIO DI PALAZZO, underneath.
