In the 1910 E M Forster novel Howards End, the character Meg Schlegel is described as wanting her husband to “Only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted, and human love will be seen at its height. Live in fragments no longer”. The extra words in clues led to ways to group the “reel” answers into four sets of four, as in the TV quiz show Only Connect: enjoying central HO {lich-owls, pathogen, taphouse, orthodox}, can follow WAR {neurosis, cabinets, machines, chalking}, represented by D {deserted, denarius, diamonds, daughter}, synonymous with SEND {transmit, redirect, mailgram, telecast}. The fragments needed to complete the descriptions spelt the title HOWARDS END, written below the grid. Any spacing of the fragments, or none, was accepted.
